1. The Lock

A lock is the one accessory standing between your bike and a long walk home, and not all locks are equal. A thin cable lock can be cut in seconds, and with most rentals a stolen bike ends up being the rider’s cost, so it is worth a moment before you set off. What you want is a hardened chain lock rather than a flimsy cable.

Ask: What kind of lock comes with the bike? A hardened chain lock, ideally 7mm or thicker, is the reassuring answer.

2. The Gears

Smooth gears turn Valencia’s flat, breezy routes into a pleasure. Gears that slip or refuse to engage make even gentle stretches harder work than they should be, and an unexpected jump between gears can catch you off balance. A well-kept bike shifts cleanly through the whole range.

Ask: Has this bike been checked over today, and do the gears shift smoothly? A quick test in the shop tells you everything.

3. The Brakes

Good brakes are the thing you notice least and rely on most, especially on a bike you have never ridden before in a city you are still learning. They should feel firm and responsive, not spongy or slow. This is the one check worth doing yourself before you leave.

Ask: When were the brakes last checked, and can I test them before I ride off? Squeeze both levers and make sure the bike actually stops.

4. The Lights

If there is any chance your ride runs into the evening, working lights matter, both for safety and because riding without them after dark is against the law in Spain. Cheap battery lights can fade partway through a ride, so it is worth knowing what you are getting.

Ask: Are the lights fitted and working, and what type are they? Dynamo lights or good rechargeable units are ideal, since they will not run flat on you halfway home.

5. The Tyres

Properly inflated tyres make pedalling easier, reduce the chance of a puncture, and make the bike feel responsive rather than sluggish. Soft tyres are one of the most common niggles in bike hire, and also one of the easiest things for a shop to get right, so it is a fair thing to check.

Ask: Are the tyres pumped to the correct pressure? For most rental bikes that is around 45 PSI.

6. Who Is Responsible If Something Goes Wrong

This is the part worth clearing up before you sign, not after. If a bike is stolen, scratched, or breaks down, you want to know in advance who covers what. A good shop will explain its policy plainly rather than leaving it buried in small print.

It is worth knowing up front what comes with the bike and what, if anything, costs extra. Helmets, locks, and other basics ideally come as standard rather than as optional add-ons, so a quick question here means no surprises at the till.

10. Staff Who Take Two Minutes With You

If you are new to the city, or have not cycled in a while, a couple of minutes of friendly advice goes a long way: how to lock the bike properly, the basic cycling rules in Spain, and where it is safest to ride. The best shops offer this without being asked.

Ask: Are there any local cycling rules I should know, and where is the safest place to lock up? A shop that answers warmly is a shop that wants your day to go well.
