The Beach Bikes 20-Point Safety Check: Every Bike, After Every Rental

When you rent a bike in Valencia, you’re probably thinking about the sea breeze, the cycle paths and where to stop for coffee. The last thing you want on your mind is a soft brake, a flat tyre or a gear that sticks halfway to the beach.

At Beach Bikes Valencia, you don’t have to think about any of it, because we already have. Every bike. After every rental. Before the next person rides off.

Why Most Bike Rental Shops Don’t Do This

Most bike hire shops don’t work this way. The industry norm is to hand you a bike and leave you to spot any problems before you ride off; some shops even write that responsibility into the rental agreement. Miss something, ride away, and it quickly becomes your problem.

We think that falls well short of what renting a bike should be. So here is exactly what our team checks every time a bike comes back through our doors. The full inspection runs to 20 points: two on-road ride tests, followed by eighteen workshop checks.

The Two Ride Tests (Yes, We Ride Every Bike)

Before anything else, we take each returned bike outside and ride it. Spinning the wheels inside the shop tells you very little; you only feel how a bike really performs once it’s moving.

  1. Gears, full range and smooth shifting. We run through every gear to confirm each change is clean and responsive. A slipping or skipping gear isn’t just irritating; it can unsettle your balance at exactly the wrong moment.
  2. Brakes, stopping power and rim clearance. This is the most important check we do. We confirm the brakes stop the bike quickly and that the pads aren’t rubbing the rim when you’re not braking. Constant rim contact creates real drag and makes the whole ride feel like a climb.

The Workshop Inspection

Back inside, every bike goes through the remaining eighteen checks, grouped by area.

Wheels and tyres

  1. Tyre pressure. Tyres are set to the correct pressure (45 PSI). Under-inflated tyres make pedalling sluggish and raise the risk of a puncture.
  2. Wheel trueness and spokes. We check both wheels for buckles, paying particular attention to the rear, which carries the most weight and takes the most impact. A bent wheel only gets worse, and a broken spoke is replaced straight away before it does further damage.

Lights and visibility

  1. Lights and reflectors. Lights are tested and working; we fit dynamo or rechargeable units only, in line with our eco-friendly, zero-waste approach. Our reflectors are integrated into the lights, present and in good condition as Spanish law requires.

Controls and handling

  1. Brake levers. Levers are checked for bending. They’re often the first thing to take the hit when a bike tips over in the wind or under a heavy basket.
  2. Bell. The bell is tested to make sure it rings clearly.
  3. Handlebar grips. Grips are checked for wear, since worn or slipping grips affect your control of the bike.
  4. Handlebars and frame, cleaned. Handlebars are cleaned with alcohol and the frame is wiped down, so every bike leaves free of the previous rider’s dirt and grime.
  5. Steering column height. The steering column is checked and adjusted. Getting this right matters far more for comfort and control than most people expect.

Drivetrain

  1. Chain. The chain is cleaned and properly oiled. A dry, rusty chain makes pedalling rough and is far more likely to snap mid-ride.
  2. Bottom bracket. We check the bottom bracket for any looseness. This is one of the worst failures a bike can have: if it gives way while you’re riding it can bring you to a sudden halt, and it’s a far bigger repair than something like a flat tyre.

Pedals and saddle

  1. Pedals. Pedals are checked for cracks or other damage.
  2. Seat height and angle. The saddle is set to a comfortable, safe height and angle.
  3. Quick-release seat post. The quick-release post is tested so it adjusts smoothly for you but locks firmly, so the saddle never slips down mid-ride.

Security

  1. Lock. We provide security-grade chain locks with an 8mm chain. We never use flexible wire or cable locks, however thick they look; those can be cut in seconds and give you nothing more than false security.

Stand, rack and basket

  1. Kickstand. The kickstand is checked so it’s neither loose nor bent.
  2. Rack. The rack is straight and all its screws are tight. Our racks are built to take a child seat for infants aged 0 to 4, up to a maximum of 22kg.
  3. Basket. Where one is fitted, the basket is checked for stability and cleanliness, since screws can work loose when baskets are repeatedly overloaded.

Helmets

  1. Helmet. Every helmet is checked for correct padding and fit, then cleaned and disinfected between uses.

Why This Matters More Than You Might Think

The reality across much of the bike rental industry is blunt: most shops carry out few of these checks, and some do almost none. The standard model leaves the burden with you, the customer, to inspect the bike before you leave and to flag anything wrong. Miss it, and it becomes your problem.

We’ve turned that model around. Our team takes responsibility so you don’t have to. You arrive, pick up a bike that’s genuinely ready to ride, and put your attention where it belongs: on Valencia’s cycle routes, from the riverbed park down to the beach and beyond.
